5 Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Vet for Your Furry Companion

Are you adding a new furry member to the family or are you moving to a new city and in need of finding a new veterinary care? We understand the stress and excitement that comes with these life changes.

Over the last few years, Vignesh and I have experienced both, welcoming two pups into our lives and relocating three times. With each move, finding the right veterinary care was essential. Based on our experiences, we have identified five key factors to help you navigate the process of choosing the perfect vet for your furry companion:

  • Vet Clinic Accreditation
  • Clinic Accessibility
  • Vet Clinic Availability
  • Affordable Vet Care
  • Board-Certified Veterinarians

By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision that ensures your pet receives the highest quality care. Let’s dive into these areas in more detail.

1. Vet Clinic Accreditation

The most important criteria on our list was always the quality of our vet clinic. Whoever we choose, we will be working with them to ensure the best for our pups for many years to come. One easy way to check that the vet clinic meets all the critical needs and has all the right equipment, is to check the accreditations that the vet clinic has obtained.

The gold standard in veterinary care is AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accreditation. AAHA-accredited clinics undergo rigorous evaluations to ensure they meet the highest standards in patient care, advanced diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia, pain management, and more. For instance, our previous vet, who was AAHA-accredited, provided exceptional care for our puppy when he ingested a toxic substance, without having to go to any specialty care. Their state-of-the-art equipment and experienced staff made all the difference.

While we think AAHA accreditation is sufficient choice for us, there are other certifications that can also be valuable. For example, AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) accreditation indicates a basic level of compliance with veterinary standards. If you prioritize a low-stress environment for your pet, look for clinics that are Fear Free Certified or  Cat Friendly Certified. For owners of exotic pets, certifications specific to their animal’s needs are essential.

2. Clinic Accessibility

The next crucial factor is clinic accessibility. Quick response time is essential in case of emergencies. We’ve found that a clinic located within a 15-minute drive is ideal. This proximity not only reduces stress during emergencies but also makes routine check-ups a breeze.

For instance, when our mini Aussie puppy, Sasha, decided to explore the kitchen counter and accidentally consumed an entire bottle of allergy pills – including the plastic lid – having our vet just a few minutes away was a lifesaver. The stress of the situation was already overwhelming, but knowing immediate care was accessible helped us stay calm and focused on getting out puppy the help she needed.

Additionally, we believe in the importance of inclusive care. A vet clinic should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical limitations. Features like ramps, wide doors, and designated parking for people with disabilities can make a significant difference.

3. Vet Clinic Availability

Vet Clinic Availability is crucial, especially for busy pet owners like us. We prefer clinics with extended hours and weekend appointments. It’s a game-changer to schedule check-ups and vaccinations on weekends, reducing weeknight stress. Plus, unexpected pet emergencies seem to happen on the most inconvenient days!

Case in point: Just before Memorial Day weekend, our curious corgi, Teddy, was so captivated by my Chipotle bowl that he jumped up, accidentally hitting his mouth on the table and breaking a tooth. The pain was evident, and we needed immediate care. Thankfully, our vet clinic had extended hours, allowing us to get him the treatment he needed right away.

While not always essential, options like 24/7 emergency services or on-call veterinarians provide extra peace of mind. And if your pet has minor issues, walk-in appointments can be a lifesaver.

4. Affordable Vet Care

Affordable vet care is essential. No one should need to compromise their pet’s health due to financial constraints. When comparing clinics, inquire about fees for routine check-ups, vaccinations, and common procedures. Consider asking about potential discounts, vaccination packages, or payment plans.

We’ve found that clinics offering pet insurance options or accepting external pet insurance are often more accommodating to budget-conscious pet owners. Unexpected illnesses or injuries can be costly, and insurance can provide a safety net. For instance, when our Corgi, Teddy required emergency dental surgery, our pet insurance helped alleviate a significant financial burden.

Additionally, consider clinics offering annual wellness plans. These packages often include routine care like vaccinations, exams, fecal/heartworm test at a discounted rate. Our current vet offers an excellent wellness plan that has saved us money over the years.

Don’t hesitate to compare prices with similar clinics in your area. Understanding the average cost of services can help you make informed decisions. Additionally, some clinics offer additional services at no cost, such as nail trims or weight management consultations, which can add value to your pet’s care.

5. Board-Certified Veterinarians

Access to board-certified veterinarians is a significant advantage when seeking top-tier care for your pet. These specialists undergo rigorous training and certification in specific areas of veterinary medicine.

  • Specialized Expertise: Board-certified vets offer in-depth knowledge and experience in areas like surgery, internal medicine, or dermatology.
  • Complex Cases: For serious health conditions, a specialist can provide advanced diagnostics and treatment options.
  • Collaboration: Many clinics collaborate with specialists, ensuring comprehensive care for your pet.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing specialized care is available can provide reassurance in case of unexpected health challenges.

We’ve experienced firsthand the importance of board-certified specialists. When our corgi, Teddy, developed a mysterious eye ulcer, we sought the expertise of an ophthalmologist. Their specialized care was instrumental in healing Teddy’s eye and preventing further complications. Additionally, when our Aussie, Sasha, exhibited signs of discomfort, our vet quickly recognized the severity of her pain and referred us to an emergency specialist. Their prompt intervention helped alleviate her suffering.

Closing Thoughts:

Choosing the right veterinarian for your furry companion is a significant decision. By carefully considering factors like clinic accreditation, accessibility, availability, cost of care, and the availability of board-certified specialists, you can make an informed choice that ensures your pet receives optimal care.

We hope this guide has provided valuable insights into the process. We’d love to hear your thoughts! Share your experiences in finding the perfect vet for your pet.
